Float Through Arthritis: The Health Benefits of Swimming

Arthritis affects millions of people worldwide, characterised mainly by joint pain and stiffness. The condition can manifest in many different forms, with differing levels of pain, and although often thought to be an issue affecting the more senior among us, it can actually occur at any age! Whichever form, joint, or age you’re experiencing arthritis, maintaining joint health and staying active are key to managing symptoms.

Swimming is considered one of the most effective exercises for people with arthritis. Not only does it help improve mobility and reduce pain, but it also offers a fun and soothing way to stay active. High-impact activities such as running or jumping can worsen symptoms by putting additional stress on the joints, whereas the low-impact nature of swimming is gentle on the joints while still providing the benefits of a full-body workout. We all love the weightlessness of floating in a pool – well, the joints of an arthritis sufferer feel like they just got an all-inclusive spa day pass for some well-deserved rest.

While the buoyancy of water reduces stress on joints, it also offers resistance that can help strengthen muscles. Stronger muscles around the affected joints can help stabilise and protect them from further damage. Not only this, but swimming also strengthens the heart and lungs without putting undue strain on the joints, helping to improve cardiovascular fitness.

If you haven’t been active for a while due to your arthritis, be sure to ease into swimming; starting with short sessions (10-15 minutes) and gradually increasing the duration and intensity.

If you enjoy socialising or prefer an instructed workout, water aerobics classes are an excellent choice. Our Aquarhythmics classes across Pendle Leisure Trust combine cardiovascular exercise with strength training, all while providing the benefits of water resistance. Many of our members have debilitating conditions such as arthritis and attend our classes multiple times a week to keep moving and to keep social in a place they feel safe.

Before starting any new exercise program, it’s always a good idea to consult with a health professional to ensure that you are exercising safely. And once you’re ready to dip your toes in, we’ll be here to welcome you to one of our 3 swimming pools (Pendle Wavelengths in Nelson, Pendle Leisure Centre in Colne, and West Craven Sports Centre in Barnoldswick). Why not try a free 7-day fitness pass with us to use any of our facilities for a whole week with no strings attached – now that’s an offer you just can’t refuse!
